Professional Development Opportunities
This training is ideal for educators and anyone working within a caregiving role in children’s services or the disability sector
Overview
To understand emotional regulation, we must first understand the central nervous system and how changing arousal levels impact function and capacity. Understanding how the state of our nervous system impacts our capacity to emotionally regulate, and how and why sensory experiences impact the arousal state of the nervous system aims to give participants the tools to support those in their care on an individual level.
The state of arousal of the central nervous system directly impacts emotion and our ability to think clearly and rationally. Children need to be regulated in order to participate and engage, and they need to participate and engage in order to learn within all aspects of development.
Emotional regulation can be impacted by many things, but the way in which we process sensory information is a key factor. Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives, organizes, and responds to sensory stimuli from the environment. The way we process sensory information shapes how we perceive and interact with the world around us and influences all areas of daily life.
Understanding the ‘why’ is a key outcome goal for this presentation. Sensory processing is complex, and there is no one size fits all. As adults, most of us tend to understand our sensory selves and can adapt within our daily lives to avoid uncomfortable experiences. Identifying sensory differences in others can be far more difficult.
At the end of this presentation, you will have an array of strategies that can be applied in practical, everyday situations, and the skills to build upon these to support those in your care to learn and grow in a way that works best for them.
